Loyola Marymount University is a successor of the St. Vincent's College for boys in Los Angeles, a pioneer catholic college, the first institution in Southern California that was dedicated to a higher learning purpose, inaugurated by the Vincentian Fathers, in 1865.
After the school was closed, in 1911, Los Angeles College was founded by the members of the Society of Jesus, being later renamed as Loyola College of Los Angeles, achieving the university status in 1930.
In 1968 Marymount College was moved to Loyola University campus, as an autonomous institution, and 5 years later, Loyola Marymount University was formed by the union of Loyola University and Marymount College.
Today, LMU, as it is called by the students, is one of the 28 members of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities and among the 5 Marymount institutions of higher education, being known as the largest Catholic University on the West Coast, having an enrollment of around 10 000 students.
The university is offering students more than 50 major programs, 57 minor programs, one doctoral degree, 31 master's degree and 15 credential programs, through 6 colleges and schools, including Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts, College of Communication and Fine Arts, College of Business Administration and Frank R. Seaver College of Science and Engineering.

LMU is sponsored by 3 major religious orders that have been associated with education numerous times over the years: the Society of Jesus, the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Orange and the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary, preserving the Roman Catholic identity of the school.

The history of Los Angeles begins somewhere between 1765 and 1771 and archaeological investigations suggest that the area was inhabited 20 000 years ago, before the Europeans arrived in Southern California.
The person who played an important role in the city’s founding was the former Governor of California, Felipe de Neve, who identified San Jose, Santa Barbara and Los Angeles as the sites for his new `pueblos` (towns).
Historians are debating on the first name of the city, Doyce P. Nunis saying that the Spanish people called it `El Pueblo de la Reyna de los Angeles`, which means `The Town of the Queen of the Angels`, pointing as proof a map dating from 1785, were he found the phrase.
The county of Los Angeles was founded on the 18th of February, 1850, a few months before California was admitted in the Union.
The town of Los Angeles soon became a cattle ranching center, having today El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historic Monument as a permanent reminder of that fact.
Over the years, Los Angeles grew, becoming one of the largest cities in California, having today a population estimated at over 4 000.000 inhabitants.
The best time to visit Los Angeles is in August, considered to be the warmest month of the year, bringing temperatures as high as 84°F. During winter, the weather is cold, with temperatures that tend to be as low as 48°F. February is known to be the wettest month of the year, bringing plenty of rainfall to the city, with an average of 3.68 inches.
